Training Effective Robots #science #news #robot
An enormous amount of data demonstrating tool operation is needed to train a robot to use them. You could show a robot how to drive a nail using a hammer, but for it to remove a nail, the robot also must know to turn the hammer around and what angles and leverage are necessary for removal. But a group of researchers are working to simplify the training process. We’ll explore in the U.S. National Science Foundation’s “Discovery Files”.
There are many approaches for training robots. Some include photos and others may include simulations, or demos. Each dataset may also capture a unique task or environment. Combining all these sources into one machine-learning model is an efficiency challenge...

Here's Why Coral Reefs Are So Important
Просмотров 2067 часов назад
What is the importance of coral reefs? We all know coral to be colorful and vibrant marine formations in some of the world’s most beautiful tropical locations. Coral reefs are home to an estimated 25% of all marine species. With that amount of biodiversity, coral reefs play a critical role in the ocean’s ecosystems. Gino Scofidio, a contractor in NSF's Office of Legislative & Public Affairs, ho...

On August 8, 2023, a devastating fire swept through the town of Lahaina on the Hawaiian island of Maui. Andrea Kealoha, an assistant professor, and Sean Swift, a doctoral student, from the University of Hawaii at Mānoa, join to discuss their research into the impacts of wildfire on the coastal ecosystem.
Bat Senses #science #news #bats

Most of the 1300 or so species of bats are small and feed at night. While their nocturnal nature means that about half of the known species have developed advanced hearing and calls for echolocation , some bat species rely more on their sense of smell. We’ll explore the sensory biology of bats in the U.S. National Science Foundation’s “Discovery Files”. Much has been made of the bat’s use of ul...

Many kinds of Elephants are nearing extinction due to poaching for their ivory tusks and habitat loss from development. But what difference would it make if there was a way to communicate with these endangered animals? We’ll explore new insights into Elephant cognition in the U.S. National Science Foundation’s “Discovery Files”. The blast of trumpeting Elephants might be their most famous sound...

We don't want "ai", aka computer programs, doing anything else. It is bad enough people are dumb enough to think it is actually intelligent and not programmed poorly. That is because the idiots companies are hiring cannot program or code worth crap so they use it as an excuse, and also to see how gullible people are, and who believes every single movie they see. Fear sells and fear allows people to be controlled.

Okay folks everyone seems to be not understanding what this video means with regards to the native peoples. native peoples in North America had horses prior to contact with Europeans but only kinda. the Spanish brought the horses into North America in 1519 in what is now Mexico. Shortly afterwards , within decades , native peoples started domesticating and trading horses. it doesn't take but a couple of decades for those horses to make their way to what is now the southwestern part of the United States. Because of trading and other cultural traditions they tended to be in the western part of the continent and didn't really make it to the east. it's after the Pueblo revolt that horses started to make their way East. Horses originated in North America but died out well before any people got here. No, the native peoples didn't eat them into extinction. That makes no sense because horses are such useful draft animals and they had been using dogs as draft animals. if you have to choose between a dog and a horse for a draft animal you would always choose a horse. and yes while native peoples would eat dogs just like European explorers of Antarctica would eat their dogs when things got bad; that wasn't a normal food source nor would horses have been had they been here at the same time. Yes, horses did start in the Americas but they migrated the other direction to Asia eons prior to native peoples by the time people started showing up in North America the horse had already made it to the rest of Asia, Europe and Northern Africa. so yes native peoples had horses prior to European contact but this would not be considered to be pre-columbian

A new book published by Austin Macauley Publishers titled From Chemistry to Life on Earth outlines abiogenesis in great detail with a solution to the evolution of the genetic code and the ribosome as well as the modern cell in general using 290 references, 50 illustrations, 6 information tables and 267 pages. A molecular natural selection formula is proposed with a worked example for ATP.

Most people don't know that Einstein said that singularities are not possible. In the 1939 journal "Annals of Mathematics" he wrote - "The essential result of this investigation is a clear understanding as to why the Schwarzchild singularities (Schwarzchild was the first to raise the issue of General Relativity predicting singularities) do not exist in physical reality. Although the theory given here treats only clusters (star clusters) whose particles move along circular paths it does seem to be subject to reasonable doubt that more general cases will have analogous results. The Schwarzchild singularities do not appear for the reason that matter cannot be concentrated arbitrarily. And this is due to the fact that otherwise the constituting particles would reach the velocity of light." He was referring to the phenomenon of dilation. Mass that is dilated is smeared through spacetime relative to an outside observer. It's the phenomenon behind the phrase "mass becomes infinite at the speed of light". A 2 axis graph illustrates its squared nature, dilation increases at an exponential rate the closer you get to the speed of light. A time dilation graph illustrates the same phenomenon, it's not just time that gets dilated. Dilation will occur wherever there is an astronomical quantity of mass because high mass means high momentum. This includes the centers of very high mass stars and the overwhelming majority of galaxy centers. It can be inferred mathematically that the mass at the center of our own galaxy is dilated. This means that there is no valid XYZ coordinate we can attribute to it, you can't point your finger at something that is smeared through spacetime. More precisely, everywhere you point is equally valid. In other words that mass is all around us. This is the explanation for dark matter/galaxy rotation curves. The "missing mass" is dilated mass. Dilation does not occur in galaxies with low mass centers because they do not have enough mass to achieve relativistic velocities. It has been confirmed in 6 very low mass galaxies including NGC 1052-DF2 and DF4 to have no dark matter, in other words they have normal rotation rates. All binary stars have normal rotation rates for the same reason.
